"Physical Review Letters" has published the latest findings of the Nanospintronics and Nanomagnetic’s NIRT team including post-doctoral associate Dr. Erdong Lu (first author of the paper), which found that a new type of magnetic-semiconductor bilayer has a number of advantages for spintronics. By using a magnetic-semiconductor sandwich containing the correct ratio of manganese to gallium, they can control the spin properties, specifically the magnetization. The Mn:Ga ratio is controlled by monitoring the surface reconstruction during growth of the material. Another key aspect is that the bilayer can operate at room temperature.
