International Workshop Attended July 23-26, 2006
Following workshop to be held in SE Ohio

Written by Liz Leitch, 10.20.2006

NSNM principal investigator and professor A. R. Smith attended the first International Workshop on Spin-Polarized Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (SP-STM1) at the Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Hamburg, Germany. The event took place July 23-26, 2006.

Topics discussed during the workshop involved the latest advances in the theory and application of SP-STM to the study of nanoscale magnetism.

As an invited speaker, Smith gave a talk titled “Spin-polarized Scanning Tunneling Microscopy of Magnetic Nitrides.” He presented collaborative work on the topic of atomic scale magnetism of manganese nitride surfaces.

Highlighted in the talk were the very recent results from the theory performed by scientists at the Max-Planck Institute for Eisenforschung. The theory was used to explain intricacies involved in understanding the surface magnetic standards. It was found to give a comprehensive understanding of experimental results of Smith’s laboratory.

Smith also served as a member of the workshop’s International Advisory Committee (IAC) which met while in Hamburg. The IAC discussed the possibility for the next workshop to be held in 2008. Smith suggested that the SP-STM2 workshop would be ideal for southeast Ohio, and the group unanimously agreed.

Details as to the specific location have not yet been determined, but the event will most likely take place in and around Athens, Ohio.
