The NIRT group along with Ohio University NQPI and the Department of Physics and Astronomy honored Athens-area middle school and high school students for their participation in a nanoscience essay contest at an awards ceremony on Friday.
Eighteen students submitted essays answering the question “how will nanoscience be used in the future?” Contestants were graded on creativity, grammar and connections to science. The essays ranged from expansions on current research to new possibilities that could be developed in the next 50 years with the help of nanotechnology.
The winning essay in the high school category titled “…And Now” written by Sarah Roberts, a senior from Morgan High School, featured her hypothetically winning the 2025 Nobel Prize for Medicine for her work with nanotubes. Other winners included students from Athens High School, Eastern Elementary in Reedsville Ohio and a home-schooled student from Canton, Ohio.
A faculty and student panel working with the NIRT group judged the essays.
